‹Round and Around›
An Audio-Visual Project / Directed by jang minseung & Composed by jung jaeil / Presented by Korean Film Archive
‹Round and Around› is a new audio-visual project planned and produced to reflect the significance of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, which marks the 40th anniversary this year, and to take a multiple view of Korea’s modern history.
Based on archive footage, the project, which combines video and exhibition, intends to overview Korean society of the 1980s through various non-linear axes of time and space beyond May 1980 of Gwangju.
Visual director jang minseung masterly uses archive footage and historical records and music director jung jaeil presents a cappella choir music based on excerpts from the Psalms.
The project offers audio-visual resources so that the audience of “now and here in 2020” can step into historical moments of “then and there.”
In the black box intended to pull down the boundaries of theater and gallery, large AV equipments reveal the moments of development, demolition, and resistance in Korea from Gwangju in May 1980 to the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
