Writing Cinema with Cinema
Date : 2025.07.15.Tue ~ 07.23.Wed
What are the ways in which we can reflect on cinema?
Talking with those who have watched a film together, listening to the filmmaker’s own stories, writing down our impressions and analyses, or reading the reviews of someone with a different perspective. The most immediate methods that come to mind are all through words, spoken or written.
The showcase "Writing Cinema with Cinema" seeks to spotlight Korean non-fiction films that invite us to think about cinema through the very same medium—film itself. Countless elements of cinema that cannot be fully conveyed through words find richer expression when communicated through the same medium as their subject. Moving beyond conventional narrative cinema, the selected works span documentary, archival footage, audiovisual film criticism, video essay, and experimental film—different forms that overlap and interweave. Across 32 titles, each with its own themes and modes of expression, what unites them is the trace of long and personal meditations on the medium of film.
The 45 filmmakers featured have delved deeply into film history, film criticism, the ethics of filmmaking, modes of expression, the responsibilities of recording, and the transformations and futures of the medium. Through their unique cinematic languages, they capture moments of hesitation and conviction alike. Instead of hastily diagnosing the much-discussed “crisis” of cinema and movie theaters, their voices—taking steady, considered steps while thinking carefully about the medium they cherish—resonate further and deeper than any surface-level concerns.
It is often said that a single film exists in as many forms as there are viewers. The stories told in these works will only be completed by today’s audiences, watching together in the shared darkness of the theater. We await that encounter with the audience—the eternal point of departure and return for cinema. The possibilities for what we can say and share about film remain inexhaustible.
