Curator's Choice - May/June 대표 이미지

In conjunction with the 'Hong Sang-soo Retrospective', the May/June 'Curator’s Choice' presents two films deeply cherished by Director Hong Sang-soo. The first is Yasujiro Ozu’s Late Spring (1949), which Hong selected as one of his choices for the "Greatest Films of All Time" in the 2022 Sight & Sound poll. Capturing the quiet moments between a father and his soon-to-be-married daughter through the exquisite aesthetics of the tatami shot, this masterpiece closely examines the sorrow and truth of life swirling beneath the surface of ordinary routines. It offers a glimpse into the foundational perspective that shaped Hong’s own cinematic universe. The second feature is Im Kwon-taek’s Chunhyang (2000), a film Hong recommended for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)’s Korean cinema retrospective this past February. By organically weaving the traditional rhythms of pansori with cinematic imagery, the film revives Korea's intrinsic tempo with a modern sensibility. It serves as a testament to how formal experimentation can be transmuted into an overwhelming vitality, resonating deeply with the distinct cinematic rhythm that Hong himself has consistently pursued.
