Recreation of Classic

Tosuni: The Birth of Happiness

Director: Park Sang-Ho

Year : 2013

The present movie, which was a 35mm film when it was released, was lost but preserved by the Korean Federation of Film Archives after Director Park Sang-ho donated a 16mm print in May 2003, thereby enabling the movie to be shown again in the “Recreation of Classics” series. Director Park’s seventh movie, “A Happy Businesswoman” (“Ttosuni”) takes the form of a family melodrama on the outside, but is a movie with a unique, realism view point. The lives of common people living in the outskirts of Seoul are pleasantly and warmly depicted, centering on a North Korean refugee family from the Hamgyong Province in the postwar period.

Commentary scripts by movie critic Kim Jong-won on the direction of the movie, movie critic Park Yoo-hee on the movie, and researcher Kim Gi-ho of the Korean Federation of Film Archives on the digital restoration process are included in the Korean and English 44-page pamphlet. Included as an appendix are an image gallery of filming location shots and documents related to censorship, and a “Video Comparison of Before and After Digital Restoration” (28 mins.).
