Choi Young-Jin, a student of Yun Hee College, intends in enlightenment movement for farmers with his colleagues who have the same will. While they are reinforcing the strength for independence, Young-Jin came to be in love with a member of his club Song Ji-Suk, daughter of a powerful pro-Japanese leader. Meanwhile Ji-Suk's brother Hak-Su promises a Japanese called Suki to give his sister. As the Independence Movement breaks out, Young-Jin and Ji-Suk are about to leave for Shanghai. But they are arrested by Suki who harshly tortures them and finally Young-Jin becomes mentally disordered. When a pro-Japanese cat's paw Oh Ki-Ho tries to rape Young-Hee who refused his marriage proposal, Young-Jin kills him with a sickle. He comes to his senses again but is taken to the hill of Arirang under arrest by Japanese police.
