This film consists of three stories - Father, Hope and Family. The first part, "Father" is about Myung-hee's mother whose first husband dies and becomes the fourth wife of Han-seob. Because of her infertility, Han-seob's third wife Jong-gi's mother is abused and treated like a maid. But Han-seob's daughters and only son side with Jong-gi's mother in fear that Myung-hee's mother may have a son and mistreat her, thus creating hostile relationship. In the second story, "Hope", Jeong-min and Mi-ran grow up during an era of rapid economic growth. But they are still victims of their times because they were subject to the fallouts of political, social and cultural discrepancies as well as tragic family histories. These wounds propel Mi-ran to become a student activist and Jeong-min to fall in unnatural love. Third story, "Family" deals with family history. Jeong-min's family history brought him chronic loneliness because he is unable to co-exist amongst his kin. He is a product of a fatherless age and this puts him in a state of constant yearning for paternal love. It is only natural for him to seek this love from other men but society is not so easy to accept him.
