Sejong the Great ( Sejongdaewang )
This film centers on the life of King Sejong, who created the Hunmin Jeongeum(Korean alphabet). Despite fierce opposition from his subjects, Sejong devotes himself to the study of Hunmin Jeongeum for his illiterate subjects, while outside, he defends his country's borders against the Yeojins. With the wise woman Antakgap as his consort, Sejong strives to serve his country, even as his health deteriorates, by holding a festival of fertility.
The film was adapted from a radio play by HLKA and shot in black-and-white cinemascope. By detailing his relationship with his concubine Antakgap, a folk tale, the film reveals Sejong's simple and human side. The film's large-scale battle scenes, costumes, and props provide a glimpse into the technical capabilities of the 1960s film industry and its view of historical facts.
