The Japanese Emperor And the Martyr ( Ilbonjegukgwa poktanuisa )
Set in Shanghai, China. Araki, a Japanese military intelligence officer, visits Bong-chang, who works at a Sakura musical instrument shop, and asks him to spy on Yoon Bong-gil, a Japanese bookstore clerk. Bong-gil confronts Bong-chang at the tavern with Araki and believes that Bong-chang is cooperating with the Japanese. When Bong-chang confronts him again in front of the Provisional Government building, Bong-gil accuses him of being a “dog of a man,” but Bong-chang refuses to budge and demands to see President Kim Gu. Taken before Kim Gu, Bong-chang reveals the reason for his visit. Bong-chang has traveled to Japan because he has had a lot of trouble with the Japanese people. After working as a weaver in a musical instrument store and a printing shop, Bong-chang takes a chance and tries to assassinate Min Dong-geun, but is caught by Japanese gendarmes. Chased by Japanese gendarmes, Bong-chang saves his life with the help of Tamako (Okran), a bar girl. Damako, whose father is Korean, decides to help Bong-chang, which gives him the opportunity to work as a clerk at her aunt's house in Shanghai. Despite his confession, the rebels are suspicious of Bong-chang. One day, Bong-chang learns that the Japanese police are planning to intercept a Shanghai rebel group smuggling money to the United States, so he rushes to the docks.
