Megalomania of D + The Fake
Megalomania of D
Yeon Sang-ho │ Korea │ 1998 │ 8min
As the title suggests, "Megalomania of D" captures the perspective of a patient undergoing treatment for delusions of grandeur in a hospital. The bizarre sensations of a man who believes his fingers keep growing are vividly expressed through puppet animation.
The Fake (Sa-i-bi)
Yeon Sang-ho │ Korea │ 2013 │ 100min
“Sa-i-bi (似而非): outwardly resembling the real, but in essence entirely false.”
A church is established in a village soon to be submerged due to dam construction. Around the same time, newly appointed pastor Chul-woo and Min-chul, the father of Young-sun, arrive in the village. Each senses in his own way the strangeness surrounding the church. Meanwhile, Young-sun, who had dreamed of escaping the village after being accepted to college, falls into despair upon learning that her father has squandered all their money, including her tuition, and turns to the church.
"The Fake(Sa-i-bi)" chillingly captures the desperation of those who want to believe even in a lie, and the greed that seeps through such cracks. Continuing from his debut film "Megalomania of D", Yeon Sang-ho’s exploration of the human psyche unfolds with remarkable clarity here. As the director’s second feature-length animation, bridging his prolific path from animation to live action, the film won the Best Animation Feature Award at the 46th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival.
