In the bitter winter of Pyongyang, ‘Bori,’ a diplomat working at the Swedish Embassy, is in love with a traffic officer named ‘Bok-joo.’ With only a short time left before her departure, Bori applies for an extension of stay to remain with Bok-joo—but the reality before them is far from easy. Meanwhile, Ri Myung-jun, the embassy interpreter who has been closely monitoring Bori’s every move, begins to act differently, placing her at a crossroads of choice.
Set in a meticulously researched and faithfully recreated winter Pyongyang, the film’s unique visual style heightens the pervasive sense of isolation and loneliness between the characters. A graduation project from the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), "The Square" received the Jury Distinction in the Contrechamp section at the 49th Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
