Third-rate writer Hyo-seop has not managed to publish a single decent work. Min-jae, a theater ticket clerk who loves him, does not hesitate to support him financially. However, Hyo-seop is secretly involved in an affair with Bo-gyeong, a married woman. Bo-gyeong’s husband, Dong-woo, who suffers from severe obsessive cleanliness, leaves for Jeonju on a business trip. On Hyo-seop’s birthday, Min-jae secretly goes to his house with a cake and a present. But Bo-gyeong comes out of his house, and Hyo-seop even resorts to violence to drive Min-jae away. Hurt and humiliated, Min-jae ends up sleeping with Min-su, a coworker at the theater who has a crush on her. Bo-gyeong decides to leave with Hyo-seop and waits for him at the bus terminal, but in the end he never shows up.
Adapted from Gu Hyo-seo’s novel Strange Summer, director Hong Sang-soo’s debut film The Day a Pig Fell into the Well is considered to have opened a new chapter in Korean cinema by presenting a narrative structure that broke away from the conventions of earlier Korean films.
