"Hong Sang-soo’s meditation on time, art, and mortality unfolds entirely within a four-story Seoul walk-up, where filmmaker Byung-soo (Kwon Hae-hyo, in his ninth collaboration with Hong) visits with his estranged daughter. Shot in luminous black-and-white by Hong himself, the film ascends floor by floor through the building’s discrete worlds—a restaurant, an interior designer’s office, residential spaces—with each level offering a different temporal perspective on Byung-soo’s relationships. Hong’s signature approach to narrative repetition and variation reaches new levels of formal rigor here, as conversations and encounters recur with subtle shifts that suggest the provisional nature of all human connection. The film’s structural conceit becomes a metaphor for the director’s own creative process, with Hong (who also composed the score and edited) acknowledging his position as an aging artist still hungry for experience and expression."
