In a remote South American town, a group of men stranded by circumstance and poverty are offered a chance to escape. The price is a perilous journey transporting trucks loaded with unstable nitroglycerin across treacherous terrain. As each mile heightens the risk of catastrophe, fear, pride, and desperation begin to erode the bonds between them.

Widely regarded as one of the great achievements of postwar European cinema, The Wages of Fear transforms a simple premise into an extraordinary exercise in suspense. Henri-Georges Clouzot constructs tension with meticulous precision, using physical danger to expose the fragility of courage and solidarity. Its combination of relentless suspense and existential unease would prove enormously influential, inspiring William Friedkin's 1977 reimagining Sorcerer and echoing through the work of contemporary filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan.

*A TF1 Studio presentation, in association with the Cinematheque Francaise and supported by the CNC, the Monaco Audiovisual Archives, Kodak and CGR cinemas. The 4K restoration from a nitrate negative print was carried out by Hiventy.
