As his former gang dissolves and the criminal world around him begins to change, Tetsu struggles to leave the underworld behind. Pursued by rivals and bound by an unwavering loyalty to his former boss, he drifts from city to city with no place to call home. Each step further from his past only deepens his isolation, turning the wandering gangster into a mythic figure suspended between devotion and freedom.

Tokyo Drifter is one of the defining works of Seijun Suzuki’s radical reimagining of the yakuza film. Rejecting realism in favor of stylized color, abstraction, and playful excess, Suzuki transforms a familiar crime narrative into a dazzling exercise in cinematic experimentation. The moment when the protagonist begins to sing his own theme song to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies feels almost transcendent in its sheer stylistic audacity. The film is filled with such striking flourishes of invention, whose influence resonates across both popular genre filmmaking and the international avant-garde.
