Marketa Lazarova

Director : Frantisek Vlacil | Cast : Josef Kemr, Nada Hejna, Jaroslav Moucka
1967 | 160min | D-Cinema |

Voted the most important film in Czech cinema history in a 1998 poll, František Vlácil’s 1967 masterpiece Marketa Lazarová is a monumental historical drama. Loosely adapting Vladislav Vancura’s 1931 novel, Vlácil and screenwriter František Pavlícek transformed the original prose into a harshly lyrical, visually stunning epic. The story centers on Marketa, an innocent yeoman’s daughter destined for a convent but abducted by a rival clan of bandits. Her romance with the bandit Mikoláš serves as the foundation for a complex historical mosaic. Weaving together multiple characters and subplots, the film depicts a bleak, brutal vision of the early Middle Ages where paganism clashes with Christianity, and love battles hate. Backed by years of meticulous research, it was the most expensive Czech film of the 1960s, and its artistic value remains enduring today.
