The 1969 historical drama The Witch Hunt, directed by Otakar Vavra, is based on Vaclav Kaplicky's 1963 novel and 17th-century witch trial records. While portraying real historical victims, the film allegorically reflects the 1950s Czechoslovak political show trials. The story centers on the sadistic, greedy inquisitor Boblig, who tortured innocents and executed over 100 people for personal wealth rather than religion. His antithesis is the humanist intellectual, Dean Lautner, who tragically falls victim to this absurd violence. Created during a brief period of political liberalization, the film stands as one of Vávra's finest works. However, its anti-authoritarian themes made it unpopular with later censors, marking the end of the director's unrestrained 1960s creative era.
