Ferat Vampire

Director : Juraj Herz | Cast : Jiri Menzel, Dagmar Veskrnova, Jana Brezkova
1982 | 91min | D-Cinema |

While Juraj Herz often infuses horror into various genres, his 1982 film Ferat Vampire is a unique sci-fi/horror hybrid about a racing car that runs on human blood. Based on a story by Josef Nesvadba, the film explores the self-destructive nature of human obsession. The plot follows Mima, a speed-loving ambulance driver, who becomes dangerously obsessed with the bloodsucking Ferat racing car. Her colleague, Doctor Marek, desperately tries to save her and expose the nefarious Ferat corporation. The film's stylized, nightmarish atmosphere is beautifully elevated by cinematographer Richard Valenta and composer Petr Hapka. It stars Jirí Menzel as Marek and Dagmar Veškrnová as Mima. Herz himself cameos as a silent film vampire, a nod to the fact that the "Ferat" corporation is a deliberate homage to the horror classic Nosferatu. Ultimately, the film's true star is the menacing car itself, designed by Theodor Pišt?k and based on the unproduced Škoda Supersport 724 prototype.
