Wolf's Hole
Ten teenagers are invited to an isolated ski training camp deep in the mountains, but for some reason, eleven arrive—one more than expected. When a massive avalanche completely cuts them off from the outside world, the mysterious instructors push the youths to their limits, initiating a cruel psychological experiment of mutual surveillance and control. The camp soon descends into sheer chaos when a horrifying condition is presented: in order for the rest to survive, they must voluntarily choose one person among them to be sacrificed. Directed by Vera Chytilová, a leading figure of the Czechoslovak New Wave, this 1986 film is a highly original sci-fi horror thriller. Through erratic camera work and a bizarre, disorienting sound design, the director vividly conveys the terror and psychological pressure experienced by the characters trapped in the enclosed space. By depicting the teenagers willing to trample on each other to survive in an extreme situation, the film serves as a sharp political allegory critiquing the authoritarian oppression and totalitarian regime of 1980s Czechoslovakia. The film garnered international attention and competed for the Golden Bear at the 37th Berlin International Film Festival.
