A pet dog named Moongchi, who has spent his life wearing an anti-barking collar, is abandoned by his owner in the mountains one day. Unable to accept that he has been left behind, Moongchi waits for his owner until he meets Jjang-a, a streetwise veteran, and a pack of stray dogs, gradually adapting to a new way of life. He later encounters a pack of feral dogs living in the mountains and Bami, who escaped from a dog farm and now lives among them. Having lost their homes because of humans, the dogs set out together in search of a place where they can live freely, beyond human ownership.
Free Dogs places dogs—animals that live in particularly close proximity to humans—at the center of its story, inviting us to see the world from their perspective. As they break free from human protection and ownership and begin choosing where and with whom they will live, the film asks us to see dogs not simply as human companions or abandoned strays, but as beings with lives and choices of their own.
The film is a re-edited and newly remastered version of Underdog(2019), the animated feature directed by Oh Sung-yoon and Lee Choon-baek. The original 102-minute running time has been condensed to 93 minutes, with 4K upscaling, Dolby Atmos sound mixing, and enhanced dialogue clarity. Doh Kyung-soo voices Moongchi, Park So-dam voices Bami, and Park Chul-min voices Jjang-a.
