Dialogue Cinema: Great Dialogues from Korean Movies 
 

 

Movies remembered for a single line of dialogue demonstrate the power of words that fascinate audiences. Imbued 
with the story, characters, emotion, and themes, dialogue is a literary device to make the narrative compelling. Some 
lines are so powerful that they can be compared to the production design of enormous resources. Throughout Korean 
film history, dialogue has served as a map to show the times and people. Dialogue has not only fulfilled the general 
function of conveying stories but also captured the society and collective consciousness. 

 

 

“Dialogue Cinema: Great Dialogues from Korean Movies” is an exhibition that focuses on lines that have resonated 
with Korean audiences, leaving an imprint on their mind. Exploring the dialogue of Korean films, which reflects the 
language habits and the unconscious of an era, is a way of reading the public mindscape. The exhibition is inspired 
by the recent growing interest in movie dialogue. Many screenplay collections and storyboard collections have been 
published. In addition, multiple movie lines have been trending and parodied. These phenomena show not only 
public attention to dialogue but also the changes in the ways in which people consume cinema in Korean popular 
culture.   
 

“Dialogue Cinema: 100 Korean Film Dialogue”, the 12^th issue of <i>Archive Prism</i> published by the Korean Film Archive in
the summer of 2023, encapsulated 70 years of Korean cinema through featuring lines from 100 films from 1954 to 
2023. This exhibition is an extension of the magazine, but also another version that enables audiences to experience and
appreciate film dialogue in a multidimensional way.
 

“Dialogue Cinema” is a virtual theater where lines, once confined to letters and papers, are projected onto a screen 
like moving pictures as well as a memory theater that looks back upon the legacy of Korean film history. As a single 
video essay, the exhibit embodies dialogue of 100 movies from different eras. Moreover, as moving typography, it 
indulges in the beauty of the written words and their depth as cinephiles playfully appreciate and perform lines. 
The Korean Film Archive has collected and preserved scenarios over the past 50 years and built a database of 1000 
movie lines for this exhibition, which will allow audiences to enjoy dialogue in their own ways. 
 

The exhibition will open up an opportunity for you to remember dialogues that have mesmerized people throughout 
Korean film history and to grasp and empathize with the power of words to leave vivid images in audiences’ minds.
