KOFA Double Feature: Drifters, Hustlers, Dreamers
Date : 2026.11.10.Tue ~ 11.25.Wed
The Cinematheque KOFA program 'KOFA Double Feature: Drifters, Hustlers, Dreamers' brings together Josh Safdie's feature debut 'The Pleasure of Being Robbed' (2008), his latest feature 'Marty Supreme' (2025), and 'Heaven Knows What' (2014), co-directed by Josh and Benny Safdie.
In a city like New York, countless people go about their lives, each driven by their own sense of purpose. In The Pleasure of Being Robbed, Josh Safdie's first feature, we meet Eleanor, a woman who steals other people's bags. Driven by curiosity and impulse, stealing for Eleanor is a way of slipping into the cracks of everyday life, encountering unfamiliar worlds, and turning chance encounters into unexpected adventures. Heaven Knows What offers a portrait of Harley, a homeless young woman navigating the streets of New York while struggling with heroin addiction. For her, the streets are both a place of refuge and a site of constant uncertainty, where the struggle to survive is inseparable from her turbulent relationship with Ilya. In Marty Supreme, the titular Marty dreams of achieving international success through a sport few take seriously. Determined to prove his potential to a world that doubts him, he constantly creates new opportunities for himself, willing to take even reckless and unethical risks to seize the future he envisions.
What connects these protagonists is their restless engagement with the world around them. Each moves through the city in their own way, driven by impulses, desires, and circumstances that often lead them into unpredictable situations. Plans unravel, chance encounters take unexpected turns, and situations spiral out of control. But it is precisely in these moments that the characters reveal themselves, along with the raw, unvarnished truths of their lives. Driven by a pursuit of authenticity, the Safdies' filmmaking captures these moments with an intoxicating immediacy. Their films also vividly convey the restless energy of New York and the desires of those who inhabit it, placing this program in dialogue with 'Cinematic Spaces: New York.'
'The Pleasure of Being Robbed' was first introduced to Korean audiences through Cinematheque KOFA's 2021 retrospective, 'THE SAFDIES'. We hope audiences will enjoy the opportunity to see it on the big screen once again, this time alongside 'Heaven Knows What' and 'Marty Supreme.'
