"It's like you can see everyone from up here. But no one can see you."
Taipei Story is a pairing of the masters with YANG at the helm and HOU Hsiao-Hsien as his leading man, playing a former youth national baseball team member, but relegated to guarding an aged fabric store with old values. As her girlfriend is embracing life in the metropolis and ready to make a splash in her career, the two are inevitably drifting apart. As the bighearted protagonist cannot find a way out of the rapidly materializing world, and is finally stabbed by a young man whom he holds nothing against. As he bleeds helplessly on a deserted street, he can only ponder at his faded past glory, callously devoured by the inhumane metropolis charging ahead in the economic engine.
