Cities on Film: Taipei

Date : 2020.10.13.Tue ~ 11.24.Tue | Venue : Cinematheque 1

'Cities on Film: Taipei' brings together films that depict Taipei, and by extension Taiwan and its people, in unique and memorable ways onscreen. These films spanning many decades and genres collectively explore, both directly and indirectly, the historical, geographical, and psychological richness of Taipei and the intimate impact they have on its inhabitants. Our hope is that this program will highlight the diversity of Taiwanese cinema, and can serve as both an opportunity for admirers to revisit their favorite classics and a welcome introduction to those uninitiated to its wonders.

The program is divided into three sections, each focusing on a specific theme and time period. 'Taipei in Classics' features five films from the Taiwan Film Institute collection that were originally produced in the 1960s and 70s and provide a taste of classic Taiwanese cinema. 'Taipei in Transition' features six films from the 1980s to the mid-90s that are associated with the First and Second Taiwanese New Wave and highlight the repercussions of the political, social, and economic upheavals brought about by the turbulent modern history of Taiwan. Finally, 'Taipei in Love' features six exemplary Taiwanese films from the late 1990s to the 2010s that revolve around the complex intricacies of love, friendship, and family, which are simultaneously specific to Taiwan and universal to humankind.

CinemathequeKOFA would like to thank the Taiwan Film Institute for their help in curating this program and their generous support through the Taiwan Cinema Toolkit project.
