"I think being in love is a beautiful thing. But you have to be brave. And be prepared for rejection."
Cai meets Susie who works at the bookstore while he teaches himself French to visit his girlfriend in France. Preparing his retirement, Uncle Bao asks Cai to deliver a goods in return of flight ticket to France. All the while, Bao’s nephew Hong kidnaps Cai’s friend in exchange of Bao’s goods. With many characters and complex story line, the main story of Au Revoir Taipei happens during one night. Yet, the clear introduction of the character and the focused narrative on the theme of “love” make the film’s confusing story into one of main attractions. As many as characters are present, various love stories such as newly found, finished and nostalgic become the important axis of the film. The most attractive part of the film, however, is the uniqueness of the characters. Naive Cai and Susie, vicious yet rather foolish orange suit gang, and the romantic crime boss, their ensemble acting delightfully fills the night of Taipei. [CHO Young-jung, 15th BIFF 2010]
