[Cinema Marginal] A Margem / The Margin
Love stories unfold on the banks of the Tiete River in Sao Paulo: two couples, ignored by society, strive to connect and understand each other amid misery. They wander between life and death, resorting to small schemes to survive.
Considered by many critics and scholars as the starting point of Cinema Marginal, 'The Margin' is a sparse, lyrical film with minimal dialogue. Its marginalized characters, often reminiscent of "fools" from Sao Paulo's outskirts, intersect in fleeting encounters. Candeias is one of the few directors from this generation to continue working, albeit largely outside the Brazilian film industry, in the decades that followed.
