Yoon Gi-jun (Shin Seong-il) marries the widowed daughter of a pharmaceutical company owner and rises to the position of executive director, but he has grown weary of corporate life. Sensing his exhaustion, his wife suggests that he take a break by visiting his hometown of Mujin and paying respects at his mother’s grave.

Upon arriving in fogbound Mujin, Gi-jun is confronted with memories of his past—of a younger self who had evaded military service and suffered from tuberculosis. There he meets Ha In-suk (Yoon Jeong-hee), a music teacher from Seoul, and the two begin to develop an interest in each other. In-suk asks him to take her back to Seoul. Gi-jun spends a night with her, but when his wife contacts him and orders him to attend the shareholders’ meeting, he leaves Mujin without a word.

Based on Kim Seung-ok’s celebrated novella Journey to Mujin—often described in Korean literary history as a “revolution of sensibility”—the film is a landmark adaptation. Yoon Jeong-hee won the Best New Actress award (Film) at the 1968 Baeksang Arts Awards for her performance.
