Kim Ki-young, a Cineaste who Went Ahead of the Times
Date : 2018.03.27.Tue ~ 04.13.Fri
It has been exactly twenty years since director Kim Ki-young passed away after a sudden fire that broke out at his home. In the last two decades, the Kim Ki-young’s name has often been cited as the origin of the grotesque-ness in Korean film. Beginning with the gemstone of his filmography, “The housemaid” (1960), the director plays variations on similar motifs to generate a unique artistic world with a special grotesque atmosphere.
On the other side of the grotesque images in his film, Kim displays a sharp critique of the reality, which is represented by the dual division between the lower class and the bourgeois class, fortified by the opposition between a lower-class woman and a bourgeoisie man. It is indeed a layer of our society that he lived and observed. To this aspect of our world, the film director who was known for his strange practices added bizarre images infused with this unique imagination. As such, this surreal world created by Kim Ki-young is faithful to the fundamental value of the cinematographic media by providing fantasies, but at the same time it branches out of the imagination, to represent our current reality.
Through the works made by Kim Ki-young, who attempted to open a new chapter in the Korean film, we look back to the world and the era he occupied and understand the world he created, in addition to reflecting on how the director's legacy continues today.
