Nam June Paik: A Video Cosmos

In conjunction with the 'Nam June Paik Media Art Festival,' organized to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his passing in 2026, the Korean Film Archive and the Nam June Paik Art Center will co-host "Nam June Paik Video Cosmos." Starting with a documentary screening that sheds light on Paik’s life and artistic world, this special exhibition offers a meaningful opportunity to experience his comprehensive media legacy on the big screen, featuring everything from his early video works, which have rarely been shown to domestic audiences, to his monumental satellite projects.
For Nam June Paik, television was never merely a means of transmitting information. Drawing upon music, Fluxus, and performance, he dismantled the boundaries of traditional art forms and developed his television and early video works, reinventing the medium into a new "musical instrument" and "canvas." Paik transformed television from a one-way mass medium into an interactive art form, and further into a public arena that united the global village. Commemorating the 20th anniversary of his death, this program will provide an opportunity to re-experience on the big screen the ahead-of-its-time aesthetic vision of a maestro who broadcast the future beyond the television monitor.
